Anders To: Levi's GranFondo Organization Sent: Wednesday, November 21, 2012 Subject: 2013 GranFondo Registration Announcement Dear Organizers, I've done this event for the past two years. It's an excellent event, I got 5 of my friends to travel from AZ to do it, I'd really like to do it again, as I think it's in support of a good cause. I'm having a hard time with continuing to support it in light of the revelations of extensive, unabashed, multi-year drug use by the event's patron, Levi Leipheimer, over most of his career as a pro cyclist. He stood on the stand at the last GF, days before admitting to his extensive cheating, exhorting the riders without shame. I respectfully request that if this event were re-titled "The King Ridge GranFondo", many of us who would like to support this event could do so, without tacitly forgiving or approving of Levi Leipheimer and his actions by participating in an event under his name. I seriously doubt anyone with any respect for pro cycling would participate in a GF under Lance Armstrong's name, any more than Levi's name (even if he's served his micro-suspension and paid back a fraction of the prize money he stole from other riders). We respect that you may feel otherwise, but the GranFondo will outlast this series of events and we'd love to have you along with us, if not this year, then perhaps in the future. Anders To: Cheryl W[...] Sent: Tuesday, November 27, 2012 Subject: Re: 2013 GranFondo Registration Announcement Cheryl, Thank you for your response. I encourage you to acquaint yourself with the facts and read the affidavits to USADA of all of the riders involved, not just Levi Leipheimer. They are located at: http://cyclinginvestigation.usada.org/ under the "Appendices and Supporting Materials" tab. Levi's affidavit is at: http://d3epuodzu3wuis.cloudfront.net/Leipheimer%2c+Levi%2c+Affidavit.pdf Please note that what I allude to - that Levi participated in doping at his own initiation, long before any association with Lance Armstrong, and that he continued his doping for over a decade - is supported by his own statements in the affidavit. Additionally, note that to date, to my knowledge, Levi has not repaid ANY of the money that he won in the events he doped for, and that the ONLY reason he confessed to his doping was the threat of jail time for perjury, and a life-time ban from the sport. I fully acknowledge that Levi has "done good" through his support of the Gran Fondo, which has benefited from its association with his name, his victories, and his reputation. I strongly encourage the organizers of the Gran Fondo to dissociate themselves from Levi as his name, his victories, and his reputation have all been shown to be lacking. The event has a strong enough following that it will continue to thrive on its own, and it would be a much more attractive event if participation in it wasn't in some form, a tacit approval of the extreme harm that doping has caused to pro cycling by its association with Levi Leipheimer.
